Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 1031 is a section of the United States tax code that allows for the deferral of capital gains taxes on certain types of property exchanges. Specifically, it allows taxpayers to defer paying taxes on the sale of the property if the proceeds are used to purchase similar property as part of a qualifying “like-kind exchange.”
